    1. Criteria for choosing a national hero as said by the Technical Committee of the National Heroes

1.1. Heroes are those who have a concept of nation and thereafter aspire and struggle for the nation’s freedom.
1.2 Heroes are those who define and contribute to a system or life of freedom and order for a nation.
1.3 Heroes are those who contribute to the quality of life and destiny of a nation. (As defined by Dr. Onofre D. Corpuz)
    1.4 Part of people's expression
1.5 A hero thinks of the future, especially that of the future
1.6. The choice of a hero involves not only the recounting of an episode or events in history, but of the entire process that made this particular person a hero. (As defined by Dr. Alfredo Lagmay)

    2. Deliberation on the criteria of a National Hero

2.1 A national hero should manifest care for the country through patriotism ( Romualdez, 2012)
2.2 A national hero must do everything for the betterment of the country and people
2.3 Must be able to promote social justice (Romualdez,2012)
2.4 National hero must be willing to make sacrifices
2.5 Romualdez also stated that a national hero must be God fearing and have good moral character
2.5.1 Doce questioned this statement; what if they are atheist?
2.5.2 One must recognize the diversity of people (Sir Castillo,2012)
2.5.3 National heroes are also human, they are prone to imperfections and mistakes
2.6 a National hero must be recognize by the population of the country (Dalay,2012)
2.6.1 One must be recognize and have the ability to influence(Riolope, 2012)

    3. Other suggestions in choosing a hero

    3.1 Pick a hero for each generation(Pio Roda, 2012)
3.2 Choosing a hero shall not focus on symbolism
3.3 We must not only give credit to those who died for our country but also for those who live for our country
3.4 There should be no monopolizing of national heroism

For us, a hero is someone who gives us eyes to see things we are blind of, someone who gives us ears when we are already deaf, someone who gives us a mouth when we can no longer speak out and stand for ourselves, someone who gives us hands when we can no longer touch people’s lives. We guess that is what a hero is, someone who makes people believe that they can do something and drive them to action even when they are too scared to view reality with their senses.

  2. LEONARDO, MARY LOUISE

To begin the debate about the Criteria for choosing a National Hero, Alex Romualdez proposed his own set of standards in the determination of one. Among the distinctive traits, he proposed is that of being a God-fearing Filipino, a role model to the people, a person who does not have a vice, someone who is morally good and sets a good example towards other people and more importantly, someone who serves as an inspiration to his fellowmen.
Brian Doce firmly questioned some of the traits specifically that of being God-fearing since a person could still become a hero even if he is an atheist or not. Julius Dalay supported Doce of his questioning the trait involving the religion and about the morality of the person. Jeanoel Endaya laid down the epitome of argumentation. Endaya opposed Romualdez in stating that a person must be morally good to become a National Hero. He argued that what he is looking for is not a Hero but a Saint since his basis is in accordance to his goodness and not towards the heroic deed; he has done for his country.
Francis Esteban supported Endaya’s opposition to Romualdez’s proposition of morality as a standard to follow in the determination of a National Hero. He also believed that to call someone a hero, he must be dead. He also made mention Friedrich Nietzsche’s idea involving the subjectivity of morality. An act could be morally good to you but towards another, it might be the contrary. Ayla Cristobal also supported Endaya by saying that the relativity of being good and being bad is still subjected to the person’s perception. Ellaine Bernardino opposed Esteban’s mentioning of Nietzsche’s concept because Nietzsche is an individualistic person. In finding a National hero, one must always what the collective will wants and Nietzsche is not the right person to follow in the determination of a National Hero. Bernardino also supported Endaya’s argument of having a saint instead of a hero since the basis is in accordance to the goodness or badness of the person.
Kristel Capio proposed that one National Hero is not the right thing to decide upon for there are many people who served as a hero for the country. She proposed that there must equal treatment towards the heroes who died for the Filipinos. Many children nowadays only know Jose Rizal and not much about Andres Bonifacio and other heroes.
Xavier Enriquez opposed Capio’s proposition of not having a National Hero at all because having one entails a symbol of unity and a binding effect to the Filipino people. Kate Viernes also opposed Capio’s proposal and gave her own criteria by stating that a hero must serve as an inspiration and must be recognized by all. In contrary, Cyron Aranas supported Capio in her proposition of not having one National Hero because he also believed that it was not only Jose Rizal who must be recognized and appreciated for his efforts since many have done the same thing towards his countrymen.
Nino Pio Roda proposed that the criteria for the National Hero must be changed and added upon through time. Time changes and so must the standards be. He said that the criteria must follow the standards of the present committee’s proposal and must have additions if the necessity prompts to.
Lastly, Janella Quizon gave her approval to all the arguments and proposals that the previous people and added her own criteria that a hero must be someone who is willing to sacrifice for his fellowmen.

    1. In addition, I believed that a National Hero must be someone who serves as a great leader who could prompt his people in moving towards liberation. He must be recognized for his efforts to collectively save his compatriots amidst colonization. His priority must be of the Filipino people at all times. A good example would be Ninoy Aquino for he fought for the Filipino people even if death is the price. He never stopped opposing the irregularities occurring within the country and within the Filipino people and that attitude is a great example of being called a Hero.

  3. 1. Criteria for choosing a national hero as said by the Technical Committee of the National Heroes
1.1 A national hero must be focused on the concept of nation building
1.2 Must aspire to attain freedom.
1.3 Contribute to a quality life and destiny of nation. ( defined by Dr. Onofre D. Corpuz)
    1.4 Is a part of people’s expression
    2. Deliberation on the criteria of a National Hero
2.1 Must have care for the country through patriotism
    2.2 Willing to make sacrifices
    2.3 must be morally guided
2.3.1 Opposed by Enriquez that not all hero must morally guided; all people can make mistakes yet they can still be categorized as a hero
2.3.2 According to Elaine it must be a model with good character because teachings are started when at the young age so if the hero is not a good model children my think that it is ok to be bad because you can still be categorized as a hero.
    3. Other Criteria for a Hero
3.1 It must be dedicated to his Country
3.2 Choose a hero for each generation
    3.3 It must be dead
For me the characteristic a hero must is bravery, because if a hero is not brave enough to fight for country’s freedom you cannot count them a hero. Hero must also be dedicated to his country and he must sacrifice his life for his nation.

  4. 1.0 Criteria for being a National Hero as said by Technical committee of National Heroes
1.1 Those who aspire and struggle for nation’s freedom
1.2 those who define and contribute to a system or life of freedom and order for a nation
1.3 Heroes are those who contribute to the quality of life and destiny of a nation

2.0 Deliberation on the Criteria for National Hero
2.1 Better to die with honor than to die without (Alex,2012)
2.2 Should be recognized by the people(Dalay,2012)
2.3 The capacity to influence others(Reolope,2012)
    2.4 Not a perfect person(Cristobal,2012)

3.0 Other Criteria for a Hero
    3.1 Part of peoples expression
    3.2 Thinks for the future
3.3 Can sacrifice for the nation
3.4 Dedicated for the preservation of the nation

Our general thought of hero is someone who risks life for others, but in addition to this a hero should also have a heart for his countrymen, passion to serve and dedication to his work, a hero who has a wide range of ideas and thinks for possibilities. I think that a hero should not be someone who is remembered because he is famous, he should be remembered as someone who does everything to make his country dignified and proud.

The topic of the debate is circling around the argument of the criteria for choosing a national hero as said by the Technical Committee of the National Heroes.

The discussion began rolling in when Romualdez was first to speak up and voice out his own version of criteria of a national hero in line with the presented criteria of Technical Committee of National Heroes.

    1. A national hero must be able to manifest his total love for the country
    2. He must promote the betterment of the society and the prosperity of the country
    3. He must be willing to sacrifice his own life
    4. He must be God-fearing and exhibits his view of morals in accordance to what is viewed good by society.

As the debate got into the core of the topic, many of our fellow classmates has criticized Romualdez’s last criteria, God- Fearing.

After Romualdez, Doce began and questioned his criteria first-hand by asking, “What if the person meets the criteria, but is an atheist? Is he not fit anymore to be a National Hero?

Right after that, Dalay began right after him and included that a national hero must be recognized by the population. In addition with that, Reo Lope also added that a national hero must also have the capacity to influence people.

Cristobal then opened the open-ended question about being national hero in line with his morality. She explained that good moral character doesn’t always fit for the criteria of a national hero.

Pio Roda exclaimed that not only Dr. Jose Rizal should be called our only National Hero; he then proposed that the committee must add more people that fits the current criteria that they presented. Our country consists of diverse cultures and people; technically, adding more to the list will help the current citizens be able to relate more to them.

Esteban came next and then added to the discussion that a hero must also be “dead” in order to fit into the criteria. A national hero that is currently alive is subject to change as time passes by; more often than not it is inevitable that sooner or later they will tend to direct themselves into corruption. This will now hinder his image as a national hero, for he has corrupted the image of what a national hero is supposed to be representing.

Endaya, also countered the never-ending circle of discussion regarding the morality of a national hero that he is supposed to possess. He believes that if we truly want someone that considers morality as criteria for being a national hero, we might as well find that certain someone running for being a saint. People must dwell on the reality that national heroes are not perfect human beings, and they are entitled to make mistakes as well. Enriquez then quipped that being too idealistic on the criteria of national hero isn’t right, but supported the idea that a national hero must be influential not only among his peers but also to the masses.

In conclusion to the debate that had happened, I support the last of the batch speakers’ defense, especially that of Bernardino and Viernes, regarding the issue of morality that was emphasized.
I think that morality is being taken too seriously as something that should be perfected by a human being, but I think that in this discussion, morality is being implied as something that is taken as being a role model for the society. First of all, a national hero represents the whole country; it is sometimes taken as the perfect representation of what a citizen is supposed to be for the whole country. Also, a national hero is often idolized in our culture, and I think that if his actions gets misunderstood by the masses, it will cause jeopardy among society and not only that, but it can also be misunderstood when we express our desire to imitate them justifying our actions just because our national hero did them, we can also do them, which is an unreasonable excuse. I think that morality is necessary, because it is set as an example in able to mold our next generation for the welfare of our society.

  7. 1.0 Criteria for creating a national hero (Technical Committee of the National Heroes, 1993)
1.1 One who has a concept of nation and aspire and struggle for its freedom
1.2 defines and contribute system of freedom and order for a nation
1.3 who contributes to the quality of life and destiny of nation.

2.0 Report on the deliberation of criteria on national hero
2.1 Alex Romualdez started the deliberation by enumerating his own set of standards of being a national hero
2.1.1 A hero manifest a total love for his/her country
2.1.2 He/she has a concrete ways to uplift the country
    2.1.3 A hero sacrifice his/her own life
2.1.4 God-fearing and has good moral characteristics
2.1.4.1 Brian Doce agreed that a hero must have a good moral character however he questioned the criteria of being "God-fearing"
2.1.4.2 On the other hand, Jeanoel Endaya opposed the idea of good moral characteristics. Arguing that good morality as a basis, it should have been a criteria in looking for a saint.
2.2 Another criteria according to Julius Dalay is that the hero is recognized by the public.
2.3 A hero must have a capacity to influence (Reolope,2012)
2.4 Esteban added on the criteria that heroes must be dead. He also quoted Nietzsche in contradictory to Endaya’s argument on the morality of a hero, saying that “morality is subjective, truthfulness is relative”
2.4.1 The concept of Nietzsche cited by esteban was contradicted by Ellaine Bernardino. Since given the nature of the Philippines as collectivist country, we must follow what the collective will wants.
2.5 Pio Roda propsed a collective heroes in his criteria. An addition of hero who became known in the generation they lived in.
2.6 According to Kristel Capio, heroes are representative of national people and in choosing we should not limit ourselves in proclaiming one national hero.
2.6.1 The argument was opposed by Kate Viernes since a national hero must serve as a role model to his countrymen.
2.6.2 the same with Viernes, Francis Enriquez contradict Capio's criteria. One is considered a hero because he/she symbolizes the Filipino people and therefore unifies them.
Personally, I agree in the idea of hero as a symbol of a nation which unifies them and in the idea that we need not limit in selecting one national hero. I think being a Filipino hero is to represent the distinct qualities of a Filipino and be a role model with his/her fellowmen. He/she should be regarded as a hero not because he is famous but because of passion in helping his fellow Filipino people.
