PGC - Politics in the Field

Both the study of political science and the practice of politics touches human life in its many facets.  Your task is to form groups of 5-6 members.  Group members must be posted as a comment to this post

Your group will make a 3-5 minute presentation which is either in the form of print (poster), short video, or song.  Output must be original and certified by the members.

The output will be an information advertisement regarding a particular part of society which is touched by politics.  See your branches of learning related to the study of political science.  Examples can be cigarette smoking, or Iglesia Ni Cristo recent activities, or the DAP.  There are many aspects of human / social life that you can advertise as political.  Your goal is to inform the reader/audience about the topic and show how it is political.  A video can be 3-5 minutes.  A poster definitely will require a few minutes of discussion by the group.  The song can stand by itself.

You will be graded based on:

Reasoning 5pts
Content 5pts
Preparation (Composition) 5pts
Research 5pts

All outputs must be ready on July 30, 2014

  24. Our poster is about Vigan and how it is nominated for a spot in the Seven Wonder Cities of the World. It actually serves as a poster ad to promote it. It is political because if we win it will help boost our economy in terms of tourism. Number of tourists will increase and so will the employment rate especially the ones living in the said city. We may not feel oblige to vote but let us feel responsible since it is for the betterment of the country. Clicking on the 'vote' button won't hurt. The voting is still on going until December.

  25. TERRITORIAL DISPUTE
    (Geopolitics)

We are going to discuss our topic which is the territorial dispute on the Spratly Islands between the Philippines and China. As we have heard in the news, the Philippines is currently having a territorial argument with the People's Republic of China. There is a very long history of the dispute on the islands located in the South China Sea. The arguing states of China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan are all claiming the Spratly Islands in whole or in part. Now, people are wondering why are these countries fighting and clashing over these lands? It turns out that the Spratly Islands is comprised of about 150 or so reef islet or very small islands which are believed to have rich deposits of gas and oil. The Ayungin Shoal and the Panatag or Scarborough Shoal are some of the islands which are very rich sources of raw materials. It is also said that the position of the islands in the South China Sea gives a strategic advantage to the state who owns it.

This topic is an aspect of human life because like what was mentioned earlier, these islands are rich sources of raw materials and therefore can give jobs to our fishermen. Also, this issue is greatly concerned on the safety of the Filipinos. If China didnt get what they want, there is a great possibility that they will use their military advantage against us. That is the reason why our country is making friends and creating alliance with other countries like USA and Japan because we believe that they can help and support us in the event of a military conflict.

In defining Geopolitics which is the study of geography(both human & physical) on international politics and relations, the territorial aspects of political science and international law. The Scarborough shoal is located in South China Sea water area about 150 km2. It is a triangle shaped chain of reefs and rocks with a circumference of 46km and 124 nautical miles west of Masinloc, Zambales that is well within the Philippine’s 320km exclusive economic zone. Based on the definition of Geopolitics, this issue is clearly political because it portrays the Philippines' interstate relations by having multilateral negotiations and discussing the laws and rights of our country in terms of national territory. It also tackles about the influence of physical factors, like the sources of raw materials, in our economy and in our society as well.
