2POL3 CosPlay of Comparative Politics

This activity is inspired by Queen Amidala in the film that we recently watched as introductory reading.  The dresses that she choose from her wardrobe oftentimes seem to reflect the mood of the situation that she is in.

For your task, you are to pick a particular sovereign state of which you are interested in.  You will post here as comment your chosen state, which will reserve that for you.  ONE STATE PER STUDENT, NO SHARING OF STATES.  FIRST POST, FIRST RESERVED.  There are enough states around the world to accommodate all of you.

After choosing your state, you will review that state’s profile and current political conditions.  From this you will choose the costume for your CosPlay.

Each student will be given 2 minutes to go in front of the class on August 4, 2014, explain why he or she chose that costume and defend what is currently interesting (politically) about that state.

No purchasing or renting of expensive costumes or attire.  Use your practicality, creativity, social skills, and cleverness to dress yourself up for the CosPlay.

You will be graded based on:

Reasoning and Content 5pts each (convince me to get interested with your state, and that your state is political)

Costume 5pts x 2 (creative, matches your concept)

Preparation 10 pts

Total of 30 pts

PGC - Politics in the Field

Both the study of political science and the practice of politics touches human life in its many facets.  Your task is to form groups of 5-6 members.  Group members must be posted as a comment to this post. 

Your group will make a 3-5 minute presentation which is either in the form of print (poster), short video, or song.  Output must be original and certified by the members.

The output will be an information advertisement regarding a particular part of society which is touched by politics.  See your branches of learning related to the study of political science.  Examples can be cigarette smoking, or Iglesia Ni Cristo recent activities, or the DAP.  There are many aspects of human / social life that you can advertise as political.  Your goal is to inform the reader/audience about the topic and show how it is political.  A video can be 3-5 minutes.  A poster definitely will require a few minutes of discussion by the group.  The song can stand by itself.

You will be graded based on:

Reasoning 5pts

Content 5pts

Preparation (Composition) 5pts

Research 5pts

All outputs must be ready on July 30, 2014

   

Political Science as a Profession - Members Introduction

Update: use short bond for the CV.

This curriculum vitae (CV) will be different from the common style. 

The Common Style

You can learn the common style anywhere.  Tips for the common style (Bio Data/Resume)  is that it should be spotless, must have plenty of white space, good readable font style and size (Times New Roman 12), and must be chronological.  A secret in crafting the common resume is that it must be done using a two column table, one column for the Month and Year, the second column for the particulars (sequence - achievement, award giving body, and place – e.g. High School, University of Santo Tomas, Manila).  Each entry must have its own row, (1 entry = one row.

The cv you will be making AND SUBMITTING is in narrative form, usually found in books (“about the author” part) and descriptions of great men and women. 

You will compose your cv in MS Word, 1” margin on four sides, see above for font, double spaced.  The title is all caps, centered and bold faced.

Your name will begin the 1^st paragraph.

1^st paragraph will talk about your educational background.

2^nd will narrate your high school co-curricular and extra-curricular life.

3^rd will state WHAT YOU THINK is political science about.  Followed by why you are taking it as your degree.

There must be a picture, 2x2 or similar sized to my sample.  Located at the upper right corner.  It’s a scanned photo, or digital photo. And is part of the document, hence already part of the printing.  Pictures WILL NOT BE PASTED OR STAPLED OR ATTACHED IN ANY OTHER WAY other than as prescribed.

For the Class President

Compile all submissions and place them alphabetically in a clear book.  The 1^st page must be a cover.  I expect a creative cover, formal, elegant, and yet fun.  It must have as cover title.  Write the full words Political Science instead of pol in the section.

Thesis Advising Policies

1. The 1st meeting must be a general meeting with all advisees.
2. I always make myself available for my students.  
• Please, always maintain decorum in communicating with your adviser, particularly via SMS.
• Note that my cell number has not changed for the past 9 years and it's always in the syllabi.
• My email address has not changed for the past 3 years and is also always in the syllabi.
3. An excellent thesis is produced through the united effort of members and their adviser.
• Do your best to work in harmony with your peers.
• Never ever offend your adviser.
4. Always take note of deadlines.
• Each group should set time table for each semester (i.e. when each chapter should have already been drafted, when powerpoints are to be readied, and manuscripts printed and bound).
• Unprepared requirements on the deadline date will merit INC which may be completed during the semestral break or during the following semester.
5. Always reserve a thesis consultation room before hand.
• Always have the reservation form ready for signing.
6. Groups must be complete during consultation.
• Soft copies will serve as drafts, but must be in PDF format.
• No thesis card = no consultation!
7. There will be member/peer evaluations of performance and contribution.
• Members who constantly burden the group through absences during group meetings, absences, during consultation (excused and unexcused), and failure to submit assigned tasks will be removed from the group, and may proceed with thesis writing and defense the year after.  
8. For data gathering:
• Make sure that you have all needed documents with you and that such documents have already been signed by the appropriate authority/ies (adviser, coordinator).
9. No group may proceed to the pre and final defense without having had their mock defense with the adviser.
