Vladimir Lenin gave us a set of parameters to identify a nation. Amita Ramanujan in Numb3rs (First Law) discussed the Turing test which makes us question is there really a difference between the real and the artificial. I discussed Civic and Ethnic nationalism before.
Here's another pairing. Primordial and Modern Nationalism. If we attempt to put both pairings together, Primordial Nationalism believes in natural components as foundations of the nation such as similar biological components, just the same as Ethnic nationalism. Primordial nationalism though traces its origins from very deep in the historic past, whereas Modern is a nation born or created in contemporary times.
Modern and civic though maybe similar but not equivalent to each other. Modern nationalism considers the nation as the product of creation rather than natural progression.
In comparison, Civic nationalism implies a nation which may or may not be created. It's different from Ethnic because in Ethnic nationalism the people naturally believe in being one, or there has always been a foundational reason to be one (similarity of language). It does mean that having Ethnic nationalism is good or bad. Civic Nationalism requires a certain degree of education among peoples, whether among a select few or in all members of the community.
In comparison to Modern nationalism, Civic nationalism leans towards a culture of democracy and development. It is specific towards this particular path, Modern nationalism is more general, it can be geared towards the dictatorship of one person, or it can be for the benefit of all.
Here are examples:
Ethnic nationalism exists among American Indian Tribesmen. One can argue that nationhood is a foreign concept, but these people's already considered themselves as one. It is also considerable as a Primordial Nation, it's ancient and progressed naturally in time.
A perverted version of Ethnic nationalism though is
Civic Nationalism is that of the Illustrados in the Philippines or that of the educated middle class in several liberal parts of Europe, particularly United Kingdom. The nation had to be created. In the Philippines, the nation was created against the colonizers so that the Filipinos can be as one and independent. The United Kingdom had to create the nation to unify the parts of the British Isles which composed it (England, Wales and Scotland, and Northern Ireland).
The example of Civic nationalism is also modern. It's not something that existed in the ancient or classical past. A different example of modern nationalism though would be transnational migrants who start to create their own separate nationhood from those who are in the place of origin (e.g. Japanese Brazilians are not considered as Japanese).
For your task regarding this lesson. In 5-7 sentences, I want you to propose a way to either make artificial nationalism better or to improve ethnic nationalism. This way should be an idea that can be put into action by a government so that people can be molded into one.
Write your plan in terms of
Sentence containing proposal (this is your argument). Followed by supporting statements (explanation), and proving statements (examples, whether hypothetical or real).
Example (i'm giving a different sample, this one argument on how nationalism is bad.)
I suggest that the government should do away with projects that support Filipino nationalism, and focus instead on globalization. The Philippines is a cosmopolitan community composed of different identities. Pushing them together causes more division than unity.
One example is the difference in language between Manilenos and Cebuanos. Another is the continuing strif in Mindanao. These conflicts hinder development. Hence the Philippines should actually focus on development itself.
Just an example, I know you can do better than me (not being sarcastic, just encouraging you).
Marks will be given for:
3 for clarity
5 for logical feasibility of your plan.
3 for following instructions
4 for originality
15 pts in total. Take note that these marks are given not ranged hence, it's either 3 or 0 for clarity. Zero-sum.

ReplyDeleteI suggest that the government should give more importance to the study of the history of the different cultures and ethnicity that are present now. One cannot vouch for ethnic nationalism if one lacks understanding in the certain idea. Given the fact that ethnic nationalism is rooted on its past history, a better understanding of what happened before would give individuals a better understanding of ethnic nationalism. For example, Person A grew up having insufficient understanding in ethnic nationalism and thus is ignorant to this certain type of nationalism, molding him to be indifferent to said issues and debates with regards to ethnic nationalism, now if the government gives importance to Ethnic nationalism then Person A’s child who we will name as Person B will grow up differently from Person A and will have a better grasp of Ethnic nationalism due to a better background in the history of cultures and ethnicity and why certain factors like similarity of language links people. A better background equals to a better grasp of ethnic nationalism which is why the government and its departments, such as the Department of Education, should give more importance to studying the past, especially if it is linked to culture and ethnicity.

ReplyDeleteFor starters, the government of the state should officially recognize and acknowledge transnational migrants in their country, such as the Filipino-Chinese in the Philippines, and give them their own position in the country as a social group. The group should be officially accepted as their own. This process may be difficult but the group would be treated equally with the original nationalities in the country and the government should try its best to remove discrimination with this social group. There would be rights and laws specifically focused for this social group and the rights and laws would just be enough that it would not threaten the sovereignty of the state. This process may seem like a takeover by other nationalities to another country but this would benefit the country's economy as this would give more options and this would be in support for globalization of the country.

ReplyDeleteThe Aeta Community and their culture should be supported and funded more by the Philippine government. Moreover, Aetas should be given livelihood jobs such as basket weaving, rug making etc. Aetas, being one of the first inhabitants of the archipelago, deserve to freely carry out their tradition. Instead, Aeta women and children descend the mountains to beg for money and food in the busy streets, and Aeta men are used as entertainers at huge zoos. These occurrences happen primarily because of the lack of proper aid from the government.

ReplyDeleteI would like suggest that the implementation of R.A 10523, otherwise known as “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013” where the program of K-12’s Mother-Tongue Based-Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) is offered up to grades 1 to 3 be extend until 10th grade where then the students will be “moving up” into juniors and seniors.
What is within this proposal is the extensive enhancement of Mother Tongue education for indeed it seems that it is very needed for not only English dominates the country’s language on almost all sphere but also the national language-Tagalog- itself is killing the dialects of whom defines the originality of the ethnic tribes e.g Kapampangan and Pangasinan. In retrospective point of view, history-where laws were enacted in relation to Nationalism and language- dictates the death of a dialect (Bas,2007), for example the implementation of Filipino as the official language in 1987(where it is ought Tagalog).
Viewing this in the political context of ethnic nationalism, MTB-MLE is one way to preserve what is being lost but it should be a process to maximize the purpose. Grades 1 to 10 approximately covers the age of 6-17 years old, where in this life span, according to psychologists is the age of middle childhood, young teens, to teenagers. This should be the reason why extensive education is needed and not basic, for there is a tendency to learn only the basic concepts and forget the roots of the dialect-or the “Amananung Siswan” in Kapampangan “root of our language”. In this regard, to give an extensive education of Mother Tongue could preserve each ethic dialects, preserve and improve ethnic nationalism not just by the tribes, but the identity of Filipinos before her history had began.

ReplyDeleteMaintaining the ethnic nationalism will be anachronistic to this generation since the world is evolving, adaptation is a must in order to develop. Hence, making an artificial nationalism better is recommended. As what civic nationalism implies, a requirement of a certain degree of education in a selected few or all members of the community should be implemented, by this demand, the members of the community will know what is the objective and interest of their co-member that could help them to intellectually communicate with the government catering them their needs that promotes unity to all. Hence, government should (and must) create a nation having a Hybrid Federalism, like what India have, that embrace only a minimal concept of federalism to focus the common interest of the people in a specific region for them to excel their strengths as a nation yet a large amount of unitary type of system (which the Philippines is currently having) is existing, still promoting effective democracy and unity. A Hybrid Federalism will highly work and feasible to accommodate common good of nation, applicable to the Philippines due to its archipelagic condition having different types of tribe and race that causing division today. With this, they could be modern nationalist without setting aside their belief in origins or being ethnic nationalist creating unified people

ReplyDeleteNeoliberalism and Globalization has positive effects in economic growth, but as it has reflected in our country, there is yet to be development as the people continue to be dissatisfied with the government. There are many who even feel embarrassed of their race, which is counter-productive as countrymen decide to leave the country due to the ‘prospect’ of globalization and offer their skills to foreign nations. The Filipinos, no matter how one tries to see it, lack a sense of nationalism that has greatly affected the nation – from top-down as seen with how government officials often lean towards corruption, and bottom-up as the Filipino people continually show indolence. There is no driving ideology that motivates them to do great for their country, and so, the Philippines must work in order to improve its ethnic nationalism; to unify the country and to establish that all Filipinos, no matter what island they live in, are Filipino, and that they must all aim towards the development of the country.
I propose the notion of having the Philippine government pass a law regarding the making of national symbols official. The national symbols of the Philippines not only represent but also support much of the country’s culture and heritage. However, laws that exact upon these symbols the right to being official and standard are nonexistent. By having official and standard national symbols, which are taught to Filipino students in as early as their primary education, ease is granted to citizens of the Philippines. It will be easier for Filipinos to identify themselves among the sea of foreign nations’ symbols. The nationalism, which is the desire of an individual to make his nation distinct from other nations, of the Filipinos will be preserved and will be made more dominant.

ReplyDeleteI propose the system of government to be shifted to federalism in order to answer prominent conflicts in the country. In this way, the government could give special attention to the marginalized part of the society thus establishing a harmonious relationship and promoting a sense of civic duty.
An example of a conflict would be the armed rebellions of the Muslims in Mindanao. Since they call for independency, a federal government can abide to their wishes. A federal government could entitle them the freedom of extracting and spending their resources in accordance to what the community needs. This also helps in shifting the focus of economic growth from Imperial Manila to other candidates of rapid economic developmental cities/regions like Cebu, Davao and other resource rich places in the country.

ReplyDeleteI suggest that government should have a program/ project- "prioritize native products program"- wherein the native culture and products of different regions in the Philippines will be empowered. Filipinos are known for being hospitable , united when there is a disaster, and especially for smiling no matter circumstance it may be, most of Filipino culture is to be proud of but apparently Filipinos are not that proud of what they have and who they are. Most Filipinos disregards their own culture and product, and tends to patronize what the foreign countries have. Thus, causes the superiority of foreign products to the Filipino native products, and foreign product dominates the Philippine market. Filipinos prepare the so called "state sides" products than Filipino made. Example of this, is patronizing the foreign shoes and sandals than the Marikina made footwear. This mentality impedes the Philippine economic development and as time pass by, the inferiority of native products gets worse which incurs loss and stops the production. Hence, with the program of the government in prioritizing the native products in the Philippine market will help preserve Filipino culture, and empower native products. And most important, in order to preserve the culture of Philippines, and help the economy to develop with promoting Filipino products, Filipinos themselves should patronize their very own and not other's.

ReplyDeleteThe philippines’ artificial nationalism can be made better by adopting federalism. The archipelagic country is composed of several regions and sectors that are separated by a huge degree, fiscally, physically and politically, with examples such as the Moro conflict in Mindanao or centralization of funds to manila. The Philippines will be better unified by actually giving freedom to these sectors and regions for control on their territory, by not funneling all focus and resource on Manila, each region will be happy and content with their sense of nationalism for their territory, financial sovereignty will supplement growth of the nation as a whole, and autonomy will decrease cultural conflicts from within the country.

ReplyDeleteThe student believes in order to strengthen the nationalism the government should lunch programs or reforms such as reorganizing the educational system by including courses on the primary or secondary level that will focus on the nation, also another option is to cut or decrease the foreign import and support local products. The use of educational system to strengthen nationalism would be hard, due to reorganizing the current curriculum will take a long period of time, but the advantage of this is that in such a young age people will get to know the importance of nationalism, and how to protect and flourish it. The plan concerning foreign trade and commerce shall decrease foreign products and indorse more local products, the reason why the student thought of this is because as time progress, more and more people are idolizing foreign products and have the idea that foreign products are better than local, so the solution to this is that the government should be the one to spearhead the promotion of local goods, so that the people would follow suit. The educational plan can be compared to leading countries in terms of nationalism, such as Greece, in that countries, ancient Greek literature is still being taught and is being supported by the government, and this lead to the growth of nationalism. The plan for commerce can be supported by South Korea, as seen in pop-culture in South Korea the country’s technology companies such as Samsung and Hyundai are the ones being used, and there is little trace of foreign products such as apple and ford.

ReplyDeleteArtificial nationalism, facing conflicts within by the imbalances of roles in the society, could give rise for the government to impose certain societal organization and role to be fulfilled by its citizens. Peace and harmony, being the primary aim of nations, needs to be achieved by the artificially made nations since these nations do not possess an identity or image which completes the idea of who the citizens are. Thus, to hinder conflicts certain instructions and roles need to be accomplished that must be given by the government to its citizens. In the movie Divergent, a society was divided to Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. These factions were given certain roles depending on the capabilities and characteristics that they have. To add more, the Factionless also serve as a division part of the society playing the role of the jobless, unemployed, and deviants in real-time society. Under a rule, the government would be able to handle and take a hold of the artificial nation by providing what its people should fulfill to avoid clashes and make a move towards a nation in equilibrium and peace.

ReplyDeleteIn order to promote and improve ethnic nationalism in the Philippines, the government can declare a month specifically dedicated to the different ethnicities in the country like the Cebuanos, the Ilocanos, the Ilonggos, etc. Celebrating Independence Day and Buwan ng Wika has proven to be effective in creating a bond among us and a sense of pride of who we are but what seems to be amiss nowadays is the genuine fulfillment and joy we get from commemorating these significant occasions; hence, what is ideal is for a certain number of days to be allotted for the showcasing of the various delicacies, traditions, and art of each of the largest ethnic groups in the Philippines. In other words, their culture must be honored and shared to other Filipinos and everyone must be encouraged to participate through preparing interesting and productive activities, and to do this, the central government may collaborate with big companies and local officials. The issue of OFWs being away from their hometown and thus being kept from participating can be solved through giving them or their families a token of appreciation for their hard work. In the case of small ethnic groups who are not big enough to sponsor a grand promotion of their identity, they are still encouraged to join and show the country of what they are capable of and share the beauty of their difference. A great number of people would say that there are much bigger and more significant issues that need to be addressed and that this proposal would just be another pain in the pocket of the Philippines, but a great number of wise people would agree and take a stand to push for this idea because they know that in order for us, Filipinos, to be more unified, we must first understand our own domestic cultural differences and accept one another. This is how we progress.

ReplyDeleteI highly suggest that it is high time for Filipinos to go back to their original roots and to improve its ethnic nationalism by not integrating foreign culture with the country’s traditional culture. Before the pre-colonial period, the native ancestors of the Filipinos had their distinct characteristic that emanated the essence of being a genuine Filipino. For example, Filipinos back then are well-known to be great agriculturalists and had their own way of writing by using the alibata. But due to the modernization and colonization, modern Filipinos tend to see that other culture is far more superior to their own without even appreciating the beauty of their fragmented culture, and that those essential characteristics aforementioned already faded and did not persist. The problem of the annexation of foreign countries like Spain, Japan, and the United States to the Philippine Islands brought numerous problems to Filipinos like questioning their existence because they do not have a concrete foundation to support where they originated and who they really are. In addition, current Filipinos are having existential crisis because they are mixed with foreign blood like Fil-Chi, Fil-Jap, Fil-Am, and etc. that implies that all Filipinos living in the country may have a diluted Filipino blood, and those aboriginal people are already extinct or endangered. Thus, one cannot change the fact that in order to improve the ethnic nationalism and the heyday of the country, one must go back and look for the quintessence of being a Filipino and one must revert, preserve and be proud of their own culture at all times because in the future, it is plausible that the art, music, and literature, the beliefs, the traditions, the values of a Filipino, or even the native Filipinos may cease to exist if one adheres more to foreign values than loving one’s own.

ReplyDeleteIt will be beneficial for the country to improve its ethnic nationalism through creative promotions of significant symbols and events of the Philippines. The government could inform the Filipinos more about the national holidays being celebrated and let them participate in nationwide events rather than merely declaring it a non-working holiday where people only decide to slack around their houses. The country, especially the youth, needs to know the value of celebrating these holidays (National Heroes Day, EDSA Revolution Anniversary, Labor Day, Araw ng Kagitingan, etc.). A good platform for information is the social media and in fact during the celebration of Independence Day, Filipino netizens use the #RP612fic which informs us of historic events in a peculiar way, amalgamated with comic and wit; the government could also create such posts and be creative enough or as how netizens say it “they could join the bandwagon”. Second, visiting the shrines of heroes and reenacting their stories and the significant events of the country is already practiced during these holidays although it lacks exposure to public. This generation is very fond of watching series and a good way to tell them history is to let them “binge watch” it on their televisions and gadgets. These efforts from the government will surely kill the apathy of this generation and improve ethnic nationalism.

ReplyDeleteIn order to improve ethnic or ethno-nationalism in the current Philippine state for example, Federalism must and maybe put into place; a plan that has been thought of over the years of Philippine politics. Ethnic Nationalism in its sense is about the cultural aspect of a group of people with the same language, shared heritage, common faith and have an own system that may be alike with the others but is unique in its wholeness. The Philippines is known for its vast number of cultures and ethnic groups and has given many problems because of this cultural difference. For example, the Muslims that has been having conflicts with the government due to its cultural approach. Having Federalism in action may aid with the internal disputes of the Muslims and may give the space needed and wanted by the other cultures as well. Federalism will aid in these conflicts and improve ethnic nationalism by giving these different cultures their own say on what they need and respects to their own culture. Pushing these cultures together will cause more division than unity as said, and giving controlled space to these cultures will help by making them promote their culture’s uniqueness and in time think of being at peace and have the unity sought of by everyone.

Since rampant “regionalism” is exhibited in the current administration, I suggest there should be a wider and wiser criterion in appointing Cabinet members and other appointed officials. Regionalism in the administration obstructs the possibilities of creating effective policies that will promote the interest of all, because of its ‘selected’ constituents. It also creates a ruckus inside the administration because it only favours one part of the society or a “region” rather.
ReplyDeleteFor example, Canada’s appointed cabinet members are people who have the expertise in their given departments; the secretary of Department of Defense is an actual war general and a war veteran, the secretary of the Department of Science and Technology is an astronomer or the secretary of Department of Agriculture is someone who is adept in agricultural processes. If we are to consider these kind of criteria and not just being ‘in the same region’ as the one who appointed them, then our notion of being one rests on fair judgement based on ability to manage a certain department or an institution and not just being granted a special position.

ReplyDeleteIn the Congress of the Philippines, I deeply suggest that the government should implement an equal representation with their legislative power to the House of Representatives and the Senate, investing a balanced number of the ethnic groups who are completely literate to handle bills and resolutions. Through this, ethnic groups will be in charge of ensuring the soul of the constitution and will be able to maintain and define their foundational reason of nationalism. Moreover, they will have the power to administer bills and resolutions that will enable them to pass on the principles, sentiments and laws. The Philippines being a cosmopolitan community, is now being given the chance to redefine their own philosophies amidst diversity. Before the formation of a governing body in the Philippines, Filipinos, were permitted to sit in the Spanish Cortes as representatives, considering that the ethnic groups also belong to the Pearl of the Orient Seas, they should not be underprivileged from the legislative administration especially by the dominant group of their fellowmen. Thus, it is humane to say that true democracy is created in a nation that is united by diversity.
Ethnic nationalism can be improved if a good mythical origin can be imposed. Since the said kind of nationalism is belief based, promoting a strong story of creation can be easy to inculcate. It is for the reason that, for it to spread, it just need a critical analysis of the past and associating the previous events or a significant person/s with the story. Another reason is that it requires a real influence such as a leader of a tribe and a group as a tool for preaching for it to levy.
ReplyDeleteProof of its success is Japan. The country has a strong mythical background that came from its “historical” book, called Kojiki, that traces the beginning of life from the droplets of water from its mythological gods, Izanami and Izanagi, until it had reached Jimmu Tenno, an emperor, which believes that he is half human, half God and spread the known belief of its people’s origin to date. The Japanese’s firm faith in its mythical origin had unified them as one nation and let them do impossible things for the prestige of their country like the harakiri.

ReplyDeletePearl of the orient seas, tested by time, our nation stood out from the challenges of the past. Due to unjust treatment of colonizers before, a battle was fought by a group of people with a sense of oneness and belongingness bounded by certain recognized commonalities and aspirations for the independence of Philippines.
Though today, we had been so enthralled with other nation's influences and practices, there is a need to preserve this nation since we had struggled for it for years that had been part of our identity of unity and oneness, and this can be achieved through some programs and projects of the leaders of our current state. Instead of judging and accusing from past leaders to another, leaders should instead adopt, return and enhance better the past comprehensive nationalistic programs of the previous leaders that had been proven to be effective and great such as Garcia's Filipino First Policy and Marcos' Decentralization Act since a country is not a laboratory for an implement-test-and-remove policies. Filipino First Policy is a cure for being so engrossed with other nation's influences that one tends not just to follow but practices as well to be like them and be one of them, with these policy, Filipino will once again learn to appreciate and prioritize those that truly belong to their own county and will foster one identity and unity. Moreover, one way to protect a nation is to protect and be able to attend to people's needs since it is one way to preserve and keep them united, with Decentralization Act granting autonomous authority to regional and local governments, people's needs would be shared and heard better, and with the sharing of decision and freedom of action, it will integrate and develop oneness, and hence, making the Fililinos to be continiually voicing out one name, one nation, one land, one people.

ReplyDeleteI suggest that the government should implement certain benefits specially to the ethnic groups such as for the Moros from Mindanao to eradicate the social boundaries between Moros and Filipinos. The Filipinos (especially from Manila) enjoys the fullest of Freedom than to the Moros who have been lack of certain privileges. The identity crisis that they have been from social discrimination leads a greater impact for the government to unify the Moros from the country. Also, the government ideals in governing are not applicable for the Moros that cannot sustain their actual needs as a citizen of this country. In order to recognize their actual needs, the government should provide a structure of government that allocates the demands and ideals not only from Manila but also provides the minority a system of equal distribution of power that protects their privileges. Therefore, in order for the Government to maintain peace and order, one must secure the rights of every minority that will cultivate the grounds of them as a citizen of the country that ethnic nationalism should be a ground to be first priority in every government because that leads to a moment of higher respect and peaceful maintence of the nation to become as one..

ReplyDeleteThe people are the ones who should care more not only the government. The only time everyone is proud of their nationality is when there is a contest or a pageant going on. Especially on social media, User 1 brings User 2 down just because User 1 does not approve of User 2's opinion and starts to throw shade. It is important to be more caring and helpful than to be mean and shady. It only shows that letting someone down is important than helping that person and working as one.
Some would consider this the new global rift: The Philippines was first of all, a civic nation. It was built on the foundations of the Spanish inquisition, hence, the name the Filipino. The government should find it easier and more productive to embrace globalization, instead. In the advent of Federalism in the Philippines—a notion we got most likely from the Americans; it will help us prepare to embrace globalization. Because, aside for the geographic and cultural problems, there is also a “growth” gap between regions. Just like how Manila contributes most to the Philippine economy. Globalization may just about help us accept and imbibe new values and ideas to bridge this ever prevalent rift.

ReplyDeleteArgument: On how ethnic nationalism is improve through requiring all ethnic groups to have a representative in the legislative branch. Different ethnic groups want to be identify and be represented with other ethnic group as a one nation. But due to problems of geographic location, this results to separation with other ethnic groups and improper representation in the national field. These ethic groups who are trying to form a nation but separated among different areas are called “irredentist” (Carlisle, 2005.) Thus, to uphold ethnic nationalism, the government should require all ethnic groups to have a representative in the legislative. By being members of the legislative, representative of the ethnic groups may assert their position with regards to policy making and upholding their kind of nationalism.
One good example would be our ethnic brothers from some isolated parts in the Philippines, like the “Igorot” would now have their own representation in the legislature. This would give them opportunity to be heard and be recognize as representatives valuing their own kind of ethnic nationalism.

ReplyDeleteThe government should promote and improve Filipino nationalism by strict implementation of the principles which laid in the constitution of the Philippines which can curb colonial mentality. Colonial mentality has held accountable for the backwardness of the country as it has adverse impact on the economy especially on industries producing Philippine made products. For an instance, foreign products like havaianas, crocs and ipanema are being patronized by many Filipinos which are earning millions while the Marikina Shoe Industry in the country remains not progressive at all and local cinemas choose to air foreign movies longer than local movies like indie films. Furthermore, the government plays a significant role in promoting Filipino nationalism through the constitution. The constitution promotes the interest of Filipinos and protect Philippine industry such as Filipino control of economy (Article II,Sec.19), complete Filipino management and control of public utilities (Article XII,Sec 11), reservation to Filipinos of certain areas investment if in the national interest (Article XII,Sec.10) and the constitution also upholds the preservation and enhancement of Filipino culture. (Article XIV, Secs 14-18) (Gabornes,2010). The Philippine constitution is obviously pro-filipino and supports its people with its endeavors. Accordingly, it will be the job of the government to ensure that the constitution will be reflected.
Velasco, Austine Clarese B.
ReplyDeleteWith the various ethnic groups in the Philippines, a struggle between these ethnic groups would arise because they don’t share common language, culture and kin. With the colonization of the Philippines, the origin and essence of tradition somehow changed. Artificial nationalism would be better in promoting nationalism in the Philippines. Giving more attention to the different ethnic groups can make artificial nationalism flourish. In the region of Mindanao, it is composed of various ethnic groups, with the implementation of federalism, the government would have the chance to improve and maintain equality between these ethnic groups. Giving funds, establishing laws about the importance of every race , culture and having proper settlement can make the country develop.
I propose an ideal state that reinforces the rights of social groups, minorities for example, in the line of policy making. A new form of nationalism should be created with the inclusion of the minorities located in some part of regions, within which a new form of nation is created based on a new basis of defining it. Minorities should be acknowledged by most people as having the same rights and benefits of a normal citizen within a nation. The Philippines holds issues concerning the situation of minorities (lumads) where they are being emancipated from their land because, it is being used for building commercialized buildings. To resolve this dilemma, the government should include the minorities, in such a way that it is patterned in the policy making of the Liberals in the US, the Obamacare for example, where it looks beyond what political ideology a person has, or what race he or she belongs to. It is also important to provide policies concerned with the welfare of the minorities and also provides a possible future for them.
