Vladimir Lenin gave us a set of parameters to identify a nation. Amita Ramanujan in Numb3rs (First Law) discussed the Turing test which makes us question is there really a difference between the real and the artificial. I discussed Civic and Ethnic nationalism before.
Here's another pairing. Primordial and Modern Nationalism. If we attempt to put both pairings together, Primordial Nationalism believes in natural components as foundations of the nation such as similar biological components, just the same as Ethnic nationalism. Primordial nationalism though traces its origins from very deep in the historic past, whereas Modern is a nation born or created in contemporary times.
Modern and civic though maybe similar but not equivalent to each other. Modern nationalism considers the nation as the product of creation rather than natural progression.
In comparison, Civic nationalism implies a nation which may or may not be created. It's different from Ethnic because in Ethnic nationalism the people naturally believe in being one, or there has always been a foundational reason to be one (similarity of language). It does mean that having Ethnic nationalism is good or bad. Civic Nationalism requires a certain degree of education among peoples, whether among a select few or in all members of the community.
In comparison to Modern nationalism, Civic nationalism leans towards a culture of democracy and development. It is specific towards this particular path, Modern nationalism is more general, it can be geared towards the dictatorship of one person, or it can be for the benefit of all.
Here are examples:
Ethnic nationalism exists among American Indian Tribesmen. One can argue that nationhood is a foreign concept, but these people's already considered themselves as one. It is also considerable as a Primordial Nation, it's ancient and progressed naturally in time.
A perverted version of Ethnic nationalism though is
Civic Nationalism is that of the Illustrados in the Philippines or that of the educated middle class in several liberal parts of Europe, particularly United Kingdom. The nation had to be created. In the Philippines, the nation was created against the colonizers so that the Filipinos can be as one and independent. The United Kingdom had to create the nation to unify the parts of the British Isles which composed it (England, Wales and Scotland, and Northern Ireland).
The example of Civic nationalism is also modern. It's not something that existed in the ancient or classical past. A different example of modern nationalism though would be transnational migrants who start to create their own separate nationhood from those who are in the place of origin (e.g. Japanese Brazilians are not considered as Japanese).
For your task regarding this lesson. In 5-7 sentences, I want you to propose a way to either make artificial nationalism better or to improve ethnic nationalism. This way should be an idea that can be put into action by a government so that people can be molded into one.
Write your plan in terms of
Sentence containing proposal (this is your argument). Followed by supporting statements (explanation), and proving statements (examples, whether hypothetical or real).
Example (i'm giving a different sample, this one argument on how nationalism is bad.)
I suggest that the government should do away with projects that support Filipino nationalism, and focus instead on globalization. The Philippines is a cosmopolitan community composed of different identities. Pushing them together causes more division than unity.
One example is the difference in language between Manilenos and Cebuanos. Another is the continuing strif in Mindanao. These conflicts hinder development. Hence the Philippines should actually focus on development itself.
Just an example, I know you can do better than me (not being sarcastic, just encouraging you).
Marks will be given for:
3 for clarity
5 for logical feasibility of your plan.
3 for following instructions
4 for originality
15 pts in total. Take note that these marks are given not ranged hence, it's either 3 or 0 for clarity. Zero-sum.
Submit your short essay on the comment box between 1:00 to 1:15 a.m. on Monday, April 3, 2017.

ReplyDeleteAn educational reform is needed to be induced most specifically the removal of the English language in the curriculum and a stronger implementation of the current Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education that we have now. Language being the foremost unifying force of a nation, a thorough development of one’s native tongue, through thorough learning, which would inevitably lead to a domino-effect of re-orienting one’s culture and beliefs. The Philippines as an archipelago in topography caused various dialects which predictably led to rifts among the Filipinos, aggravating regionalism.
The impressive blend of modernity and tradition of Japan resulted from its prioritizing itself first; in terms of their education, all subjects are taught in their native language and only lends a partial area towards the English language. The over-indulgence in the English language in the Philippine curriculum caused negligence on the Filipino language subject as exhibited in the two separate subjects for reading and language for English. Therefore, ethnic nationalism would be further improved through creating a common and stronger identity via a better grasp at our own native languages.

ReplyDeleteI suggest that the people here in the Philippines should have differences in political beliefs. Same goal and should have different manners to attain the certain goal. The problem with this is that in the manner of politics, we all have different solution to a one problem and that’s where we do argue. In order to improve this, we should promote and protect our ethnic groups and we need to know whether they are vital to our identity as Filipino. One example to attain this specific goal is to promote their culture, protect their traditions, protect their lands, It should be the non-minority people who should have a sympathy towards them.
REYES, FRANCES ADELLE A.
ReplyDeleteI suggest that the local governments should focus on improving nationalism through encouraging the ethnic groups to preserve their cultural heritage and at the same time commit to finding a way to merge progress with it. The country, being an archipelago, has developed as one which has different ethnic cultures ranging from the north to the south. This however, does not mean that these differences should be a hindrance to developing a nation that is united, because it has been proven, time and again, that there is indeed unity in diversity.
An example that shows unity in diversity are the increasing number of people who relocate to other parts of the country and therefore are able to experience another culture and eventually be able to adapt. The way in which ethnic groups can preserve their culture and at the same time be part of progress is to develop industries that will allow them to share their crafts and such can also be the source for their livelihood. A robust economy from the grassroots will benefit the country as a whole. Hence development and preservation of culture is enhanced and the exchange and adaptation that occurs within can be the springboard as to which unity in diversity is achieved and ethnic nationalism is improved.

ReplyDeleteThe Philippine government should focus on the mandate of its Constitution – a constitution approved by the Filipino people. It’s mandate as according to Article II, Section 17: “The State shall give priority to education, science and technology, arts, culture, and sports to foster patriotism and nationalism, accelerate social progress, and promote total human liberation and development.” It is in this regard that the student believes that the government should focus on: 1) education, and 2) the family.
The government should focus on education for the reason that, to some extent, it is a powerful propaganda tool in teaching the youth the importance of nationalism and being an active and productive citizen of this country. Included in education is the language – it should be nurtured and developed for it is one of the unifying force our archipelagic country has.
Secondly, the government should also strengthen the family – for the reason that it is considered as the foundation of our nation (Article XV, Sec. 1 of the 1987 Constitution) and that the government should promote its welfare through different programs that will help the family realize the role it has in nation-building.
It is in this regard that the student believes that the government should nurture, develop, and strengthen the educational system and the family.
Soliman, Maria Carmelle Angela A.
ReplyDeleteI suggest that the government should focus more on the diplomatic relations with other countries for two reasons to consider, first is that there is a vast increase in the number of OFWs who are globally competitive and second is that major international events involving nation empowerment unite the Filipinos in pride for their country and for the improvement of ethnic nationality.
The perfect example of the first reason is the fact that the Philippine economy can be considered weak compared to other countries, there is no doubt that many would consider working overseas to sustain their needs. In line with this, the government must ensure peaceful ties and partnerships with different countries to ensure that Filipino nationals are reputable and well-recognized sphere. More so, their renouncement of citizenship does not necessarily entail their disloyalty of their nationality, some just had to do it for the sake of living and maintaining their survival.
Examples of international events that unite the Filipinos as one are Miss Universe and famous boxing matches which unite the people in cheering for their co-Filipino competing in a globally-known event and expressing their pride of having the same nationality as the one competing. What Maxine Medina said, “we are one, as one nation, we are all together” during the Miss Universe event is just an epitome of how the Filipinos are proud and united by simply being called Filipinos.
With these mentioned, the government should improve diplomatic relationships with other countries for the betterment of the Filipino nationality in the international sphere; moreover, diplomacy has to be improved to help Filipino constituents who continuously strive to bring pride for the country’s identity in the international community.
Dumanil, Patrisha Louise E.
ReplyDeleteThe government must establish campaigns, projects, and societal movements that will encourage Filipinos to stop looking at other’s famous or perhaps, mainstream culture. The admiration of Filipinos towards what are “pop”, “trending”, or “modern” that root from different parts of the world are what perhaps causes the rapid diversification of today’s Filipino nation. Such great predicament it is to lay that thousands of Philippine citizens philippic about the slow progress this country has been bringing them and it is, to such theory, due to an intense divergence brought by immense foreign thinking.
The outlaying differences between the standards of those who live in the City to those who live in the province are, in one point, an example of how the Filipino nation gets diversified. The flow of modernity is seen as something that separates social statuses between people; those who easily reach them stand more dignified than those who do not. This is not about bringing the Filipino nation together but to make them understand that there is much beauty to root out from what the Philippines naturally possesses. For as Filipinos see the sense of advancement from the different nations and cultures out there, this country’s progress will spring from finding passion in what are those that are ours and thus will make the hearts of this nation stay where it belong.
Ortiz, Grace Lydel.
ReplyDeleteI recommend that government should focus more on the education of the people inside the country to make the artificial nationalism better because education can possibly be the bridge in molding all Filipinos into one. Education is for all kinds of people, and it can be applied in different regions of the Philippines. If we focus only in ethnic nationalism it may be hard because of the issue in Mindanao where the people who live there are clamoring for sovereignty from the Philippine government because they believe in the Quran not in the constitution of the whole country. This diversity can be eliminated through education that will produce educated people, government should prioritize the education especially in the Mindanao region. Imagine that every people had an access to a good school that offers good education, everyone will be united through their thoughts, because education is not biased unlike religion. Education is universal, it is not only for Catholics, everyone can have it, no matter what country, heritage, region, or religion they came from.
TRAZONA, ANDREA
ReplyDeleteIn order to lightly enhance artificial nationalism, it would be wise for the government officials, especially the chief executive, to acquire more power not for one's own interests but for the whole nation in which one has chosen to submerge oneself. The Philippines has had various versions of artificial nationalism which are greatly dependent on the head of the government. At present, the people of this nation have chosen a leader whom they hope to offer something more palatable.
A person like President Duterte could act as a principal agent to hold the nation together against external oppositions like China or USA. In addition, he or she could enkindle political participation which would also start a chain reaction among the people. For that reason, Philippines should have a strongman or strongwoman who shall continue to promote unity instead of engendering the dismemberment of its parts.
BAUTISTA, Jireh Anne Marie V.
ReplyDeleteWhat we need in our country today is a nation where one finds a keen sense of connection, similarity, and familiarity with one another; and at the same time, a nation where one adapts to the changes that would occur due to globalization. I propose a nation wherein we preserve and improve our ethnic nationalism by encouraging schools, universities, and other possible avenues for the Filipino youth as well as the elderly people to know more about each other’s cultures, beliefs, practices, languages, literature, music, food cuisines, clothing style, and the likes thru activities, events, or maybe having a subject or a discipline that would let them open their eyes and their hearts to other Filipino worlds out there. By exercising this so-called “Cultural Resonance”, wherein one must experience, first-hand, others’ cultures in order not just to know but feel to be one with them, I believe we could unite despite the diversities and overcome hindrances especially language and cultural barriers for we have and will find that string that binds us all one more time. By then, we would hopefully contribute to the development of our country together, hand-in-hand, as one whole Filipino community for I believe that nothing and no one could ever fake a connection that was never even there. It is better to improve something from a natural cause than to create or force something new to develop that has none to link them together. Thus, ethnic nationalism in this case could be the one of the solutions to further improve our beloved country.
Del Rosario, Job Louis Andrei
ReplyDeleteI suggest that the government must be more stricter in terms of accepting immigrants in order to improve ethnic nationalism. one example is the revision of the qualifications of accepting immigrant. i suggest that the government must include historical questions that will really test their knowledge about the culture. immigrants or better yet accept no immigrants at all. one exception though, is accepting immigrants who has a filipino blood whether mother or father. in that way, there are still immigrants that can contribute to the progress of the society, without compensating the fact that they still have biological construct with the other members of the nation.
The Philippines composed of different culture which can be a reason for the Filipinos to have misunderstanding and miscommunication. Diverse culture came from different provinces since Philippines was known for being peninsular country, this cause Filipinos to have different perspective and way of life such as Igorot, Waray and Ilocano which may also affects the Filipino Nationalism in terms of unity or oneness because of the cultural barriers. How can such people promote nationalism if they can’t understand each other as well? I suggest, in order to have an improved ethnic nationalism; Philippines must develop the system of education including the curriculums, we as a Filipino should know several things about our own culture instead of adopting the culture of the other Western or even our neighboring Asian countries like their language, way of clothing, foods, etc. and It is very important for the Filipinos to have a better connection to one another so we can gather the keenness of promoting or fighting for the sake of our nation and it all these starts with education. Education plays a huge part of orienting the present and the future generation to encourage them to empower our own culture rather than admiring other counties’ culture. If only the Filipinos know the hidden beauty of different ethnics practiced in our country, they might have an enhanced the ethnic nationalism being practice here in the Philippines.
ReplyDeleteCULALA, JEWEL M.
ReplyDeleteI propose that the study of the Philippine Constitution as part of the curricula should start as early as high school. Article 14, Section 3, No. 1 states that all educational institution should include the study of Constitution. However, Philippine Government and Constitution is only being taught during college level. If students as early as high school are aware of the supreme law of the land, they can be more involved regarding issues, and can point out if there is something wrong happening.
For example on the ongoing campaign against drugs, many of the victims aren't aware that what is happening is already extrajudicial killings and is not stated under the law. They do not realize that the state should actually be protecting the sanctity of life and human rights are now being violated. If more students are aware, the voice that thirsts for human rights would be bigger, powerful and know that there are actually basis that can be considered and this will result to a state that reflects all people, or a democracy not just certain interests.
Martinez, Ralph Dominic
ReplyDeleteThe author wishes to state his proposal to strengthen the Filipino Language, as well as emphasize Philippine history and local culture in the educational system because he believes that it would improve the ethnic nationalism in the Philippines. Because history is one of the most operative instrument in consolidating a nation for it aids the people understand their identity and society (Fitzgerald, 1983). Moreover, the author thinks that it helps them develop their critical judgement in diverse situations of their lives and that it also equips them to make sense of multiple perspective as they try to understand the patterns of culture and social organization of the past societies. In the contemporary period, Philippine language is spoken by almost 33% of the Philippine population while the rest only speak Filipino as their second language (Estocapio, 2017). It is also seen in the Philippine constitution that Filipino is our national language, which should unite us together towards unity and progress. In a country like the Philippines, being separated by cultural diversity it should be given the paramount importance in our educational system and in the curriculum for it is a device for unity and understanding.

ReplyDeleteGiven the task of improving ethnic nationalism, I propose that people should be able to create a nation that is united towards a better future. The government should be able to encourage it's constituents to be one and to move as one instead of making them quarrel because of their different ideas and aspirations. There should be bills or laws pertaining to the nationalistic attitude of the Filipinos. This may sound like dictatorship but one way to help each and everyone is to let everyone be open minded about the possibilities of every move we all need to do. A nation in dictatorship but with the one who will dictate is the uniting hearts of everyone who aspires for better country.
SORIANO, ERICKA
ReplyDeleteI suggest that ethnic nationalism can be improved by having an activity or a program about patronizing the country or just simply remembering the country’s history. This event must be held once a month and should be implemented and facilitated by the government. Filipinos are fond of celebrations and would like to have activities which they can actively participate in. Although this activity may seem simple, this would encourage them to be more interested in their own culture and could be a way to help them get to know their history better. “Buwan ng Wika” is an example of such activity. However, this activity is only celebrated once a year and could hardly make the Filipinos absorb everything with a limited time. Thus, making the Filipinos partake in activities regularly can improve nationalism and make Filipinos be rooted to their own country.
CALINISAN, JAMAELA CHERINA MARIE A.
ReplyDeleteTo improve ethnic nationalism, there should be enough knowledge about the nation and its people by raising awareness, equality and understanding among the people in order to avoid conflicts which may lead to the people’s discontentment and risks of it [the nation] falling apart. This is mainly because artificial or ethnic nationalism emerges because the people, especially the minorities, are somehow marginalized or not given enough attention by the government; they are treated like outsiders or as inferiors. Knowing this, it would be best to give more protection and attention to the minorities. Moreover, ethnic nationalism should be used or treated as a unifying tool that binds the people in order to maintain order, equality and self-identity. Worst case scenario would be if the people of the nation would be divided due to conflicts, would be dissatisfied and end up disrupting this kind of nationalism, they would use it as a weapon or excuse for people to inculcate violence in the society by maneuvering the nation. Should this type of nationalism be improved, it would strengthen the system of the nation, whether social, political or economic.
Villafranca, Juan Martin R.
ReplyDeleteIndustrialization: a step towards to a self-sufficient economy
The Philippine Government should focus on industrialization: upgrading machineries that will further its agricultural sector, increase support for local farmers/locals, and especially improving the production and exportation of its local agricultural goods. The Philippines has to focus on its agricultural sector as it plays an important role in boosting its economy since time in memoriam. The belittlement of its local goods and the ignorance of boosting its production have resulted in the small production of goods and have impacted the people’s standard of living. In addition, it has resulted in the dependence of foreign importation that has caused great sustainable damage to its economy by importing cheap resources that has downgraded the production of local industries.
The Philippines was once a large producer(may have been larger or smaller today) of its natural resources like producing hand-made clothes, metals(steel), and so much more. There are other why the Philippines agricultural sector declined in producing local goods but if industrialization of the local industry was focused upon by its current government/administration, it would’ve avoided the reason for importation of cheap resources. Focusing on the agricultural sector in producing more local goods for export can essentially bring in promotion of its resources and little by little uplift its impaired economy.

ReplyDeleteThe government should strengthen the roots of the Filipino nation, the Filipino language, by starting reforms in the education system and exterminating the lurking ‘colonial-mentality’ that makes the Filipinos think that English is a language greater than our own. The Filipino nation, an example of civic nationalism, is created as a response to the 300-year Spanish colonization that we have our own identity and we are not indios—we are Filipinos. We have created an identity that is raw from flesh to soul by using English—a language from a past colonizer—and prioritizing its usage to the extent that we use it in almost everything, and what’s sad is that our constitution which is the supreme law of the land is written in English when it should be the first example that we have our own identity as Filipinos. It is not too late to change the disgrace that has been done to our identity. The government, as the most political and authoritative association in the land, could: (1) prioritize the Filipino language by rewriting the Constitution in Filipino, changing the names of government agencies and offices to Filipino, and use Filipino language in ‘government-to-people’ communication; and (2) reform the educational system and make Filipino as the language of teaching and instruction so we could create future Filipinos that have a complete and genuine identity as a Filipino, and would in turn compromise a true and genuine Filipino nation.
MARIANO, Henrietta SJ.
ReplyDeleteI suggest that the government should implement projects that will empower ethnicity and avoid those that only involve a certain group of people. Since ethnic nationalism is about people who are in the same race and have the same beliefs, it is of great importance that ethnic nationalism is improved. Once these projects are carried out all over the country, it will encourage the society to embrace their own race and the race of their own countrymen no matter how different they are from each other. This will be able to inform people about the existing ethnic groups and their practices just like in the Philippines, specifically in Baguio, wherein the ethnic people are being appreciated more because they are showing their practices in little meaningful ways like wearing their tribal clothes called bahag. Although it does not completely help overcome the divisions present in the country, it encourages people to embrace not only their country but most especially the other citizens as well, even if they do not come from the same race or culture.
Gatdula, Bianca Eyrine
ReplyDeleteIn order to make artificial nationalism better, each and every citizen should show support to the different forms of art present in the country like films whether it is mainstream or independent. The preference of the people is largely affected by globalization in which they tend to neutralize their taste for local craft and subdue to foreign domination. Filipinos prefer to watch foreign or overseas films rather than local ones because they believe that the former has a better quality over the latter.
I suggest that the government should support local film industries financially. Since increased financial support could help raise the quality of locally made films and allow them to compete with the foreign productions that currently dominate the market. Moreover, they should improve the law which protects the copyright of the films since DVD copies are still sold in the streets.
APOSTOL, YVONNE XYZA G.
ReplyDeleteThe Philippines has always been a land composed of different varieties of culture due to the many influences because of colonization. In addressing the issue of having a unified country in the Philippines, the government should make projects that showcase the many different and diverse cultures of the Philippines. With this, every culture will be familiar and knowledgeable with other cultures that are not similar and/or familiar to them. Examples of this are the projects of local government units wherein they show the pride of their places, tribes and cultures. Another is the Manilakbayan wherein the Lumads told the people about their experiences and stories. With this, all of the people will be informed about the others and will be able to respect each other’s beliefs, practices, and ideologies.
Macabando, Ma. Sittie Iwaram M.
ReplyDeleteStriving to be a globally competitive country, the Philippine government requires academic institutions to improve the Filipinos’ fluency in the English language. This phenomenon is causing the decline in proficiency of the Filipinos in their own native languages. One way of improving ethnic nationalism is empowering the languages and dialects existing in the country. To improve ethnic nationalism and uplift the native languages in the country, the government must augment Michael Foucault’s concept of bio power. As a manifestation of bio power, the Philippine Constitution should be translated into different languages and dialects. Translating the Philippine Constitution in the country will initiate the preservation and cultivation of the Filipino native languages and ingrained understanding of the law of the land.
Topacio, Jose Arturo A.
ReplyDeleteThe Philippines is a country whose character and identity have been shaped by foreign cultures. Knowing this, it’s not like other countries like Japan where a sense of homogeneity is a part of their national consciousness as exemplified in their art. Nevertheless, we can see that our national artists have continuously strived to make art such as films, novels, paintings, and et cetera national and civic in scope, and this concept should further be promoted. Economic and social progress may mainly happen in the capital, but art is a form that cannot be relegated to one primary place only.
If culture and art were promoted, despite the multiplicity of cultures in our country, we may be able to transcend differences by promoting the acceptance of what makes each ethnic culture different in the first place and in effect create a better understanding of what being a ‘Filipino’ is, as Rizal did with his novels. Globally, art may also be exported to other countries. But in the end, the focus and audience will always be the Filipino, and this is why the government should propose the advancement of art as a civic and artificial way for progress in the Philippines.

ReplyDeleteThe current administration’s War on Drugs as a tool for nation building should adhere to the principle of human rights by all means, by this I mean not using coercion that could lead to death. Human rights serves as the universal framework that promotes equality for all, despite the apparent differences of their way of life. However, this campaign apparently overrides the latter with series of injustice and inhumane killings. As a result, distrust of the people especially the unfortunate, who are usually victims of the war on drugs, to the government increases as the campaign unfolds its pages. Say, for instance, when an unfortunate tries to defend himself from such allegations, the government would use force that could lead to the former’s death. Human rights is greatly violated; the concept of nation is obscured. The government should therefore at least limit the campaign to only strict adherence to the anti-drugs campaign without the use of force
Ramirez, Ramly Cloie Q.
ReplyDeleteDue to the sudden adaptation of human beings in the changing environment and the emergence of modernization in the world, I argue that artificial or civic nationalism should be improve. Human beings evolve, the society evolves; and thus the masses cannot simply preserve their ethnic nationalism along with the process of evolution. A country which was influenced by colonization—which was subject to the variety of changes that occurred in the country—like the Philippines, must have a creation of the concept of nation in order to unite the people living in diverse islands, religions and languages as well as to create an identity or character of that nationhood. A possible way to improve civic nationalism is to educate people and to promote programs which concerns the subject matter. On this way, the most Filipinos will be able to create further concepts on unifying their people in the contemporary world thus, education will be the key on protecting the country’s identity as well as to integrate the Filipino masses. Likewise, the civic nationalism is also created due to the evolutionary process that occur naturally in our environment in which the society is also subjected to the changing concept of nation. Today, the concept of Filipino identity is being identified in variety of ways due to the rise of different kinds of advocating it, for instance, famed athletes like Manny Pacquaio and others who had a Filipino blood who gave pride to the Filipinos—thus, there exists a rampant reinforcement on promoting the Filipino identity which is an example of a civic nationalism.
Cabatu, Maria Andrea D.
ReplyDeleteGiven the numerous issues that impedes our country from having a sense of unity, there is a need for the government to lean towards EDUCATION—as a means for empowering its citizens, to be PROUD of being a Filipino, and to break free from the idea that what is native is inferior, and what is foreign is superior. With the help of the schools, teachers, professors and other agents of socialization, LOVE OF COUNTRY should be inculcated in each and every heart of a Filipino or Filipina. The appreciation for the country’s heritage, its language and the people, should not be seen only during “Linggo ng Wika,” hence, the love and the desire to make a nation should be fostered in the mission and vision of every learning institute. Programs such as community development and student involvement programs (SIP) should be implemented so as to teach values, equip the minds, and mold future disciplined and responsible individuals that would be critical thinkers who will fight for our country’s interest and welfare of its people. With the help of the people from the government, each citizen will have the capacity to maximize the fullness of their potential by allotting budget in the promotion of the talents and skills of our human resources. By leaning to QUALITY EDUCATION and by upholding the TRUE JOSE RIZAL in us, by being the Jose Rizal our country needs, are two of the many ways, we can uphold our ethnic nationalism.
Cadiz, Reiner
ReplyDeleteI propose that the Philippine's electoral system should shift to majority run-off system to improve our ethnic nationalism. We do jave different perspective how we view our life and how we choose. That's why when the result of election came out, and the candidate who eon are not voted by the majority of the constituents may lead to, 1) the constituents will not follow the leader 2)each voters may fight each other.
If we are not going to unite on who will be the leader of the Philippines, may lead our nation to a decay. To conclude, shifting to majority run-off system are the key for the filipino to unite and strenghten ethnic nationalism.
Josielyn G. Verde
ReplyDeleteI suggest that to make artificial nationalism better, we must immerse ourselves in advocating awareness through the different channels of mass media regarding the different essences of the Philippines. We have come to the age of technology, where such advancement leads to better information dissemination letting one reach out to large groups of homogenous individuals in a short span of time. And with such asset, it would be a waste if we do not maximize such invention. Not only will it be accessible by different generations but through media, it would have the ability to not only disseminate information but to preserve what culture the Filipinos exudes. Moreover, with the use of advocating through media, it would lead to the development of the country due to the rise of its economic and tourist gains.
LABOTON,AIESHA BHEL C.
ReplyDeleteThe Philippines should promote the economy as the main source for the continual spread of civic nationalism. The idea is to create a national thinking to an artificial nationalism; like the Turing test, it professes to look like ethnic nationalism exists to engage economically. The Filipino’s task of nationalism ends with independence, but forgets to create a self-identity because Rizal itself did not want independence but a provincial state. Rizal also mentioned that the Philippines at that time was poor due to the exploitation the natives suffered during the Galleon Trade. This is where artificial identity can create a custom of independence for goods and products consumption in that is partial to the nation. The government can now focus on mass welfare than the character itself by focusing on the problem of the country that would progress naturally since Philippines is rich in natural resource. The Philippines as a whole can now create projects and propose budgets in the agricultural products and also marine time industries that would uplift the massive debts.
I suggest the government should declare war on a foreign power. Nationalism will arise or at least be heightened once a clear delineation or an us-vs-them mentality occurs along with a clear feeling of existential threat. The 9/11 attacks on the U.S united a divided nation between ideological differences just as the barbarian assaults on the Western Roman Empire served as a beacon to the Eastern Roman Empire who is culturally and geographically different to see themselves as Romans as well. The thought of self-preservation and the sense of shared solidarity brings people together. Hence, a war is a justifiable cause for nationalism.

ReplyDeleteThe vastness of different ethnic groups in the Philippines should not be a hindrance to its development as a nation but rather, it should be seen a source of economic and cultural investment. Example, people from Luzon are rich in financial resources, people from Visayas are rich in aquatic resources, and people from Mindanao are rich in mineral resources. Richness of culture in the country can also allow exchange of culture and tradition between different ethnicities to mix and form unique characteristics different than those of neighbouring countries. The concept of the Philippines maybe brought by the colonizers, but Filipino founding fathers also recognized the necessity of having a unified nation, other than simply expelling the colonizers. The archipelago is already separated from mainland Asia and if we will allow further division between the people of this nation, development will cease to exist. What is need more than ever is for the government to prioritize more to capitalize on what resources the country has, to educate the people of the advantages of being a diverse nation and to be reminded that no man is an island, and the Philippines being a group of island, will benefit more as a nation united.

ReplyDeleteHow does one attain a better nation in terms of ethnic nationalism? Considering the fact that the Philippines is an archipelago and has three main islands (Luzon,Visayas,Mindanao) cultural disparity is still present and will not be removed. The Philippines must now improve it's ethnic nationalism by promoting unifying laws such as eg. Tagalog being its official language to create a community with its constituents understanding one another. Another is the Philippines to promote education; promoting education as a source for people to understand one another from their cultural disparities thus lessening the disparities of one another. Religion has also a big impact in terms of ethnic nationalism, Catholicism being the major religion in the Philippines has a big say/influence to people in understanding one another and promote peace within the archipelago .

ReplyDeleteI propose that the government should patronize and support Filipino art. The Philippines is home to different ethnic groups that are scattered all around the country. These people live in isolation making them, somehow, invisible and often times misunderstood. Since art remains as one of the most effective ways of expressing ones culture, it gives these ethnic groups an identity that makes them distinct and unique. It is only by recognition and support of their art - whether it be their literature, paintings, crafts, etc. - that these ethnic groups can truly be understood, which will in turn enable us to truly appreciate them, thus generating a sense of unity.

ReplyDeleteThere are many nations in the Philippines, all of these races compete with each other in different fields in our country. I propose that the government should create a delegation program with the help of social media that can unify the different races of our country. Since other races in our country feels like they are suppressed by other races, the government should make a delegation that can help other races in return. Especially in our country many races are discriminated because of their financial status. This delegation will know the different kinds of problem they are having. By having this delegation, Filipinos will know what problem this nation is having. In our country all of us surely has problems with our own nation, thus with this delegation Filipinos can now help one another. By having this delegation Filipinos can be together as one, Helping each other is one step in making a unified country.
