ReplyDelete1. As a political philosopher I should be effective in the formulation of my own political philosophy. Since political philosophy is more of a study of 'presence' rather than visuals. To formulate a political philosophy you have to know what is what and how it is related to mainstream political philosophical topics of justice liberty and the like. Some political philosophers write political philosophy as answering the questions regarding 'universal justice'. I won't go further explaining what it is and the role of the citizens therein, you might fall in under political theory if you have to explain its origin. If political philosophy is in the 'presence' and the 'activity', political theory focuses on the 'visuals' and the 'form of the activity'.
2. Giving out a perspective on a foreign policy sense, a political scientist's view must benefit both of the country involved in the matter. Since I will use the foreign policy perspective this might involve institutions, departments and government agencies of both country of course. One agency that maybe involved is national Defense since China is a powerful and wealthy country they may threat the nation right away. The Department of Tourism may be affected to since there would be less Chinese, worst case none, that would visit our country therefore tourism rate may decrease. Most of all our Department of Foreign affairs is the one to most suffer since our relations to China because of Scarborough shoal have been in risk. Even we are under united nations alliance may be shifted.

ReplyDelete1. Several political philosophies, such as Confucianism and Taoism in China and that from Aristotle and Plato in Ancient Greece, have existed and shaped the world we know today. In order to formulate a strong political philosophy, I deem it necessary to focus on the WHYs and HOWs of the issue. If I were to pursue, for example, a philosophy that promotes peace, harmony and prosperity through egalitarianism, I would contemplate on why it must be implemented, why it follows certain laws and principles, how it could be in accordance to the interest of the majority, how it could be detrimental to them, etc. With little emphasis on logical and rational reasons, I will focus on the natural reasons that affect the issue. On the other hand, Political Theory tends to focus on the WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and WHO: scientific , verifiable and qualitative information that further supports my political philosophy. It is supported by empirical research and actual happenings from different nations and political systems. Unlike Political Theory, I would show the essence of political philosophy by centralizing on general concepts and beliefs on equality for all of mankind.
2. As a political scientist, I would choose the perspective that promotes our national interest. Liberalism gives way to a harmonious relationship because of the normative approaches: constraining the use of power between countries, setting norms and equal rights to both parties, etc. Given that our country aims to establish firm relationships with foreign countries, it is also vital to protect what is rightfully (by historical and legal claims) ours. The People’s Republic of China, as a hegemon, is expected to have the upper hand in claiming the Scarborough Shoal together with the riches it provides. We must strengthen the diplomatic powers of the executive branch ,together with our ambassadors to China, in bringing forth clarifications and strict observations in national territory—a feud that also affects other issues like trade and jobs given to overseas Filipino workers. I believe that we first provide additional securities to our coastal areas because of the alarming attacks and invasions of the Chinese. Because our country renounces war as an instrument of national policy and with respect to the rich history between the Filipinos and Chinese, the most important thing to consider is the welfare and security of all inhabitants, regardless of race and nationality.

ReplyDelete1. If I were a political philosopher, I would first formulate a philosophy based on history – by looking if such things happened before and how the people reacted to such things. History might help me in formulating theories and propositions because there might be existing political beliefs that is related to my issue or subject. The theories mentioned in the second sentence are merely beliefs which are highly different from political theory because political theory is based on empirical and scientific studies. Political theory, which was said to be entirely different from political philosophy, are not beliefs, thus, it is a study proven by experimentation which makes it almost like a philosophy but a proven one. Another way of formulating a political philosophy is by basing it to current political phenomenon because things that happened in the past may not be applicable to the present time. People tend to be subjects of change that makes the way of life of the past irrelevant today.
2. As a political scientist studying political relations between Philippines and China, I would choose the perspective of idealism in studying them. Idealism is the belief in a peaceful world order in international relations and what should the international environment be. There are many controversies arising between states and studying them in an idealistic way would be difficult but it might help the states to think of solutions regarding the feuds. In the Philippines, the chief executive, being the best representative of the country, may make agreements like treaties with China to settle disputes and build a friendly state relationship. The Philippine legislature, on the other hand, may make laws such as the prohibition of nuclear weapons, which the Philippine already has, to have the trust of other states. In simple words, it would be very helpful to study such states in an idealistic way to have a proposition regarding international disputes.

ReplyDelete1. Philosopher, he is someone that people in the world expects his guidance on the actual world that we should live in. Similar in a political philosopher they study all the possible things that they can study. They usually know what form of society, how people should act in a society, what ideologies should be used and any other questions, because for them being a political philosopher they shouldn't be just focusing on the ideas and imaginations that comes out on their minds but they should see what the real world is needing. What makes a political philosophy to political theory is that political theory has a satisfying understanding on the things that they want to prove and they are not just wondering on what is happening but they have the initiative to make out decisions on their own understanding.
2. Philippines and China are near countries from each other and what conflicts with them is the territory that they want to own as they said that they have the rights to claim that territory. The territory that they want to claim is the South China Sea, wherein it is rich in oil and natural gas. The economy of both the country has the possibility to ascend because of it. As cited in the Philippine Constitution, the Philippines is incapable of declaring an offensive or defensive war but only an existence of state of war, so for me the government should be more wise in having a decision in that matter and have a meeting with the other country and have a thorough research on which who shall claim the South China Sea.

ReplyDelete1. To compose of a political philosophy, one must observe its environment to see what fits the human beings to have a good life, to seek an explanation to the social actions of both the man and the woman and to construct a conceptualize framework. It would focus on the belief system of the individual and how would one’s political action could affect the society. A political philosophy is not scientific and it is a set of beliefs through their natural reasons alone. It spawns a vision of good life among the mass public and the it shall set out rules for the benefit of everyone. A political theory is scientific and usually identifies the relationships, causes and effects through hypotheses and statistics. It is also logical and rational, it clarifies and analyzes the norms, culture, practices and the political phenomenon in the past, present and even the future.
2. I would select the Philippines in an idealistic way and the UN has established laws in order to settle disputes among the states. Considering the fact that every county must achieve goals in the international field, the countries China and Philippines are currently in a dispute because of the Spratley Islands, - it discusses the national territory of a state. The Philippines is a republican democratic government and we use the separation of powers. The political institution involved are the executive, recognizing the fact that the president is the best representative in our country, and extending the power of the executive through the ambassadors, they negotiate to the leaders of foreign country in order to make an agreement or a treaty. The use of the legislative can also be seen here, before a treaty is approve, 2/3 of the body is needed voting separately for it to be part of the laws of the land. The Philippines cannot declare a defensive and an aggressive war and they may only declare a state of war.

ReplyDelete1. If I were a political philosopher, I will formulate a political philosophy first by choosing about the topic that I have a strong interest and believe. The topic that I will choose must be a specific topic. For example, my topic will be about justice, after choosing the topic that I will use, I will state my set of beliefs to convince myself that what I am formulating is making sense, but I also have to be open-minded while thinking about my beliefs. After formulating my set of beliefs, I will defend that using my natural reasoning and not based on an experiment based because that is one of the important thing that differentiate political philosophy between political theories. I will be able to formulate a political philosophy without using a scientific method. I will not also study the origin of my topic because that will make it a political theory and not a political philosophy.
2. If I were going to study the international relations between the Philippines and China as a political scientist, I will use the Philippines perspective of Idealism. Idealism believes in a peaceful world, it does not aim to have a war to other country, like the Philippines. It focuses only in improving its economy, but not on having a power over other country, unlike the China that gives more important to the power of their country, than the world peace. Like what they are doing right now, they threaten a war to the Philippines regarding the Spratley Island just to make their country more powerful and richer over the other. They do not think about world peace, what’s important to them is to be on top of all the countries. In the issues about international relation, like this, the political institution that should be involved is the executive, because the department of foreign affairs is under this branch and more importantly because of the President. He is the best ambassador that we can send to other country, and international issues are huge issues that should be talked about by the highest official in a country.

ReplyDelete1. If I were to become a political philosopher, the way I would formulate political philosophies would be what seems to be realistic and would become a political theory in just a matter of time. Same as to how Thomas Hobbes formulates his theory. because Hobbes’ philosophies soon became theories. A perfect illustration of this manner of formulating is in his models of homo economicus where first he had a notion that humans are rational and self-concerned economizers. Which is in fact may be either true or false in nature, then afterwards he proposed it as a political theory and provided empirical research that proves his principle. Another illustration of a way of formulating philosophies is in Machiavelli’s belief that individuals must always be equal thus through this he formulated political theories like the prince which provided discourses on remodeling governments.
2. If I were to choose what to study between Philippines and China in terms of international relation perspective, I would choose the one that aims to bring peace and promote to the international community what should ought to be, thus choosing Philippines. The issue of who owns spratlys group of islands in the south china sea becomes an intriguing issue. The Philippines do not want to argue with China that would cause them to have war with us, so the department of foreign affairs sends diplomats to china to talk about the issue peacefully and at the same time all kinds of war is renounced in our country, based on the 1987 constitution of the Philippines, Article II : Declaration of State Policies and Principles, Section two : it states that the Philippines renounces war and it generally adopts international law as part of the law of the land, ergo making the Philippines idealistic in viewing international relations. If you would view the map of the Philippines it would show that the spratlys group of islands is part of the Philippine territory, therefore Philippines should be the one to govern over the islands, that is what should ought to be. In terms of dealing with international relations, political institutions in the Philippines involve are the executive department specifically the department of foreign affairs and the president himself and the legislative department if and only if they declare a state of war as their non-legislative power granted by the Philippine constitution. The Philippines view international relations in an idealistic way, therefore making them much more wanted to be studied by political scientists.

ReplyDelete1) As a political philosopher I should be open-minded in formulating my own political philosophy. Seeking basic principles that will justify a particular form of state, show that individuals have certain rights that usually includes explaining ideas like freedom, justice, authority and democracy and then applying them in the social and political institutions that currently exist.
2) Being a Political Scientist, my choice about the perspective on international relation is Realism wherein competition and self interest are present. It mostly significant concept of power and sovereignty, national interest is a state’s action where it seeks to gain advantage or benefits to itself. For example is the issue about Spratly island whether it is part of the Philippines or China. The political institution that could be involve by this (gain advantage) when it was settled is the Department of Tourism because in every Chinese that goes to our country the tourism rate increase.

ReplyDelete1.If I were a political philosopher I should formulate my own political philosophy in a way that people would understand it because if I formulate my own political philosophy that only I can understand what is the point of it if only I could understand it. For me to formulate a political philosophy is that you should know what is the topic itself and how it is related to the sub parts of the topic. Political Philosophy for me is understanding the topic and creating questions that would give the topic an impact. while a Political Theory is applying the questions of the Political Philosophy. If Political Philosophy "understanding" then Political Theory is "application"
2.As Political Scientist if i'm going the study international relations between the Philippines and China I should think about using the perspective of foreign policy. the institution and the behavior of the leader would matter in this situation. if 1 leader make a wrong move then it might cause a war. surely that the department of foreign affairs , department of finance and department of tourism would be affected in the situation and the people who work on china. in my point of view if that happen many people would be affected because of the Chinese people discriminating Filipino people in China (no offense :) ), what more if we had a bigger misunderstanding with china. and I think that the Military would be affected specifically Department of National Defense because if china would declare a war then our military would risk their lives just to protect the country.
