Nation States Paper

Basic Format: 10 marks

Font style and size, margin will be your choice.  The choice to not justify the alignment of paragraphs should be to make it look better, not just because you did not choose any alignment.Requirement on this is that the size and font should be creative and visually attractive without sacrificing content space. I do not want a bloated paper because of excess sizes and spaces that do not accomplish anything.

Top part of the 1st page should display
Title (make your own), name, section and course (Introduction to International Relations Theory)
Arrange it however you choose, but title should go first.  Again lay it out to make it look good.

Content: 30 puts

Should have Introduction, Discussion, Conclusion.
Must follow 3rd person PoV.
Must discuss based on facts plus experience.  Refer to yourself as author, writer or researcher.

Introduction must be 1-2 paragraphs. Tell the reader what NationStates is.  Then tell the reader why you are writing.  1) to illustrate how NationStates is used to simulate comparative political experience.  2) how NationStates simulates international relations.  Tell about your state and when it was created.  Give proof.

Discussion must be around 4 to 6 paragraphs. Will show how you understand comparative politics elements as different w international relations as previously discussed and as you've read in your readings.

It should talk about the two topics mentioned in introduction.  Each topic should talk about 2-3 sub-topics.  E.g comparative political experience can talk about a. Institutions, and b. Political behavior.  Use specifics.  Behavior can have voting, activism, and other sub-topics.

Talk about how these sub-topics belong the each topic.  And how they might be mistaken or used as part of international relations. And vice versa.  Talk about how particular sub topics are for international relations, such as foreign policy and international organizations, alliances, and power.  Again, show how they can be mistaken or used in comparative politics. Support your discussion w clipped pictures from the game.

Conclusion must finalize the main points of your discussion. Summarizing it in an organized manner. This should only be 1 short paragraph, w statements said directly.

Note: proofs (10pts) are based on pictures from the game.  Pictures should be just right in size to let the reader see important data, again without exacting too much space.

Modern Political Theory Stills - Petition Pol Thought 2

For your creative performance task.

Each group has 1 modern thinker's selected works as assigned last Wed.

Each group's task is to outline the topics assigned.  Each subheading of your outline will be key points of your particular thinker.

Let's use the film as an example.

If we use Tao Te Ching quoted parts, the outline will be:

I. Will vs. Desire
  A.  Illusion
     1.  The Illusion of serving people whom we love.
     2.  The truth of serving others.
        a.  Serving those we hate.
II.  The paradox of water
  A. Strength, meaning of
  B. Softness, meaning of
III.  Property
  A.  Can a person be another person's property?

******************************************************************************

The group will submit their outline in a single long bond paper, properly formatted as per my usual requirements.  Individual names will appear at 3rd line from the top.  1st and 2nd line is reserved for your assigned thinker's reference.

e.g.

Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu
Analysis Outline
Group Presentation:
Names (surname, firstname)

******************************************************************************

Then make a picture illustrating the topics/subtopics of your group.  Main topics are outlines in the table of contents. subtopics will show your analysis of those topics.

Pictures will be created by stills made by members of the groups acting out a frozen scene that can illustrate the idea.

These pictures will be placed in powerpoint slides, each slide followed by a quote from the book.
Then followed by a slide showing 3-4 lines summating the argument.

e.g.

On the illusion of serving those whom we love.

It is easy to serve those whom we love.
Doing so simply is an act of following our basic nature, our desires.
Doing so is not really serving others, but serving yourself.
In reality, it does not really improve us as a person, for ourselves, and as a member of society.

******************************************************************************

Be ready to explain your slides in class.

******************************************************************************

Marks will be given for:

Proper outline (logical and proper format) = 10
Pictures portray the ideas = 30
Quotes match the topics in the outline = 20
Summative arguments capture the essence of the political idea = 20
Individual explanations = 20

Total of 100 pts

ETAR - 5MUS

Important things to remember.

The flow of money in the macroeconomic cycle can only be controlled through policy - regulations made by the government.

Money cannot be increased or decreased by simply printing.  It multiplies though the macroeconomic cycle of factor payments, interests, expenditures, export payments, and investments.

When people have a lot of money to spend, that is the situation when there is a high amount of money in circulation.  Because people buy a lot, sellers increase prices.  So how can the money be decreased?

The answer can be found in the chapter on money, particularly monetary policy.

Try to provide one method on how the Central Bank can reduce or increase the amount of money in circulation.  Anyone able to provide an answer gets extra credit for quiz scores.   There are only a particular number of methods, so no repetition.

Questions may be posted on the comments box.

Pls sign up for attendance at the comment box.

4Eco Essay Assignment

Hardin (1968) described the Tragedy of the Commons using grazing animals, such as cows, freely consuming grass on an open field.  Greene in 48 Laws of Power and 33 Strategies of War used actual scenarios also to describe the practicality of his ideas.

In three paragraphs of 3-6 sentences each.  Create a scenario applying one of the strategies of war.  The situation is, you are in a situation in one of the issues of the final period (see syllabus).  But you will have to pick an issue that was not the one you wrote about for the newsletter.  Goal is to show how the strategy can be used by a person in advocating for that issue.  E.g. i'm fighting for women's rights in congress, and there is this problem with other lawmakers.  So I apply strategy number x.  And I explain how.

Use your first paragraph to introduce the situation and the strategy. -2pts
Second paragraph explain how the strategy will go (like narrating a story). 2pts
1st paragraph should be clear and informative to a person who does not know what your talking about. -3pts
2nd paragraph should show a good story, not scattered, but flowing narration and not uninteresting  (be like Greene). -3pts
The logic of he scenario should attest to the application of the strategy. -5pts
3rd paragraph should directly state (possible in 2-3 sentences) what political-economic resource was used in the startegy - people, network, opportunity etc... -5pts

20pts total

Those are marks not ranges, hence do the requirement get the pt.

Answers should be submitted via eleap in the assignment area.  Copy and paste the text.  and upload the file.  DO BOTH!  Follow the instructions well.  Not following instructions get automatic 70 for this task.

System will check for plagiarism.  Plagiarized work (exceeded 15%) gets 0.

2Pol3 - Make a Nation

Vladimir Lenin gave us a set of parameters to identify a nation. Amita Ramanujan in Numb3rs (First Law) discussed the Turing test which makes us question is there really a difference between the real and the artificial. I discussed Civic and Ethnic nationalism before.

Here's another pairing. Primordial and Modern Nationalism. If we attempt to put both pairings together, Primordial Nationalism believes in natural components as foundations of the nation such as similar biological components, just the same as Ethnic nationalism.  Primordial nationalism though traces its origins from very deep in the historic past, whereas Modern is a nation born or created in contemporary times.

Modern and civic though maybe similar but not equivalent to each other. Modern nationalism considers the nation as the product of creation rather than natural progression.

In comparison, Civic nationalism implies a nation which may or may not be created. It's different from Ethnic because in Ethnic nationalism the people naturally believe in being one, or there has always been a foundational reason to be one (similarity of language). It does  mean that having Ethnic nationalism is good or bad.  Civic Nationalism requires a certain degree of education among peoples, whether among a select few or in all members of the community.

In comparison to Modern nationalism, Civic nationalism leans towards a culture of democracy and development.  It is specific towards this particular path, Modern nationalism is more general, it can be geared towards the dictatorship of one person, or it can be for the benefit of all.

Here are examples:

Ethnic nationalism exists among American Indian Tribesmen.  One can argue that nationhood is a foreign concept, but these people's already considered themselves as one.  It is also considerable as a Primordial Nation, it's ancient and progressed naturally in time.

A perverted version of Ethnic nationalism though is

Civic Nationalism is that of the Illustrados in the Philippines or that of the educated middle class in several liberal parts of Europe, particularly United Kingdom.  The nation had to be created.  In the Philippines, the nation was created against the colonizers so that the Filipinos can be as one and independent.  The United Kingdom had to create the nation to unify the parts of the British Isles which composed it (England, Wales and Scotland, and Northern Ireland).

The example of Civic nationalism is also modern.  It's not something that existed in the ancient or classical past.  A different example of modern nationalism though would be transnational migrants who start to create their own separate nationhood from those who are in the place of origin (e.g. Japanese Brazilians are not considered as Japanese).

For your task regarding this lesson.  In 5-7 sentences, I want you to propose a way to either make artificial nationalism better or to improve ethnic nationalism.  This way should be an idea that can be put into action by a government so that people can be molded into one.

Write your plan in terms of

Sentence containing proposal (this is your argument).  Followed by supporting statements (explanation), and proving statements (examples, whether hypothetical or real).

Example (i'm giving a different sample, this one argument on how nationalism is bad.)

I suggest that the government should do away with projects that support Filipino nationalism, and focus instead on globalization.  The Philippines is a cosmopolitan community composed of different identities.  Pushing them together causes more division than unity.

One example is the difference in language between Manilenos and Cebuanos.  Another is the continuing strif in Mindanao.  These conflicts hinder development.  Hence the Philippines should actually focus on development itself.

Just an example, I know you can do better than me (not being sarcastic, just encouraging you).

Marks will be given for:
3 for clarity
5 for logical feasibility of your plan.
3 for following instructions
4 for originality

15 pts in total.  Take note that these marks are given not ranged hence, it's either 3 or 0 for clarity.  Zero-sum.

Submit your short essay on the comment box between 1:00 to 1:15 a.m. on Monday, April 3, 2017.

Essay should be preceded by

your Surname, First Name.

I suggest typing it on MS Word first before submitting.  You need a google acount to log-in.

4ASN - Newsletter

Since I've already approved your topics.  You will now group yourselves further into six (6) to eight (8) members.

Plan your data gathering for a simple article for a newsletter.

Each group should choose a name for the blog, which will be submitted along with member names on the comment box (deadline of Newsletter name and group members list is on April 3, 2017).

Each article should occupy one page of the newsletter.

The newsletter itself should have a visually appealing layout without sacrificing its academic flair and content.

As a sample here is a couple of newsletters from the previous batch:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B30MHtoilXd4aUVuN1NUbnc4c1E?usp=sharing

The output will be graded both individually (70%) and as a group (30%),  and will also be presented (soft copy in pdf filenamed after the newsletter title) and defended before me by April 18, 2017.  Bring proofs of primary data on defense day.

Important things to consider.

Make sure that your thesis is at the heart of the article.

Use headings to divide introduction, discussion and conclusion (or name it differently if you want, based on content).  If headings are space consuming, use signposts appropriately (e.g.  "This author suggests / proposes / argues" (signpost for thesis), "In conclusion.").  Make sure your paragraph's ideas flow and are clear and direct.

Use proofs, pictures, and quotes.

ANY PERSON WITH 90% SECONDARY DATA fails the paper.

Grading rubrics appears below (download it individually on defense day).

Attendance: Write your name below (surname, first name) at the comment box.  Those with questions, please do, post it at the comments and I'll give the answer so that we can have a forum here.  Questions will actually impress me.

One member will eventually submit the newsletter name and title on the comment box of this post.

5MUS: ETAR Online Outcomes Activity (March 26, 2017)

For this week, the Outcomes Task is to produce an 8-10 minute skit. based on Market Structres.

By definition, the Market is the "space"where exchange of goods and services are conducted between producers/sellers and consumers/buyers.  It can be the wet market, the grocery, the sari-sari store, a stall by the street, or even Facebook and other areas of cyberspace.

These markets are structured and named basically from the number of sellers in a particular market.
Monopoly has only one seller, the rest have more than one.  The products whether goods or services also influence the number of sellers. Here products are classified as homogenous/undifferentiated (all sellers sell the same thing - usually unbranded), or heterogenous/differentiated (sellers sell differntiated products),  In a monopoly there's only one product.  In a pure competition, there's more than one or sometimes a lot of sellers, and they're selling almost the same thing, example is Tutuban tiangge of clothes.

Markets are further differentiated by how easily a new seller can enter that market to be a participant. For example monopoly is very difficult to enter, most of the time, it is actually impossible to enter that market and compete with the present monopolist.  The structure also creates effects on the price.

Your task is to analyze (based from the textbook: Chapter on Market Structure) the differences in each based on the four characteristics 1) number of sellers, 2) easy or difficulty for new seller to enter, 3) classification of product (homo or hetero), 4) effect of the structure to price.

Then produce an 8-10 minute skit showing all 4 structures.  Grades will be based on the rubric below.

Presentation will be on April 3, 2017 (Monday). Download and print the rubric for grading on presentation day, write member names at the back.

Each student should sign up at the comments section with your google account, write your name (surname, first name) to confirm understanding of the task, otherwise, post questions on the comment box, i'll reply with the answer so that we have a forum. Considered as attendance.

Each group should post their list of names on the comment box by March 29, 2017 (Wednesday). Considered as attendance.

Each group should write a brief decription of the skit in an MS Word file, and email it to rmcastillo@ust.edu.ph on Friday (March 31, 2017).  Considered as attendance.

UPDATE:  Groups can only have 7-8 members.

    Announcement: Political Economy (4Eco)

Since the syllabus is for upload on Monday, i'm posting the initial set of readings for next week:

48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene

Pdf's are scattered online, though books are available at Fullybooked.  I prefer that bookstore due to comparable price against the others.  You don't have to get the book if you don't want to since there are other readings and we'll use only a few chapters.

Note that it's the book discussion on the Laws, not the online summaries that we need.

    These include;

    1. Law 1 Never outshine the master
    2. Law 5 So much depends on reputation - guard it with your life
    3. Law 10 Infection: avoid the unhappy and unlucky
    4. Law 19 Know who you're dealing with - do not offend the wrong person
    5. Law 30 Make your accomplishments seem effortless
    6. Law 40 Despise the Free Lunch
The 6 laws will be our topics on Thursday, as part of micro political economic ideas, after you bend-and-snap.  :)

    See you then.

    Announcements: All 2Pol

The preferred reference for Fili and Noli is the Penguin Classics publication as translated by Harold Augenbraum.

I will be uploading the course syllabus by Monday.  As for now, please be reminded that within every week, Day 1 (Tuesday) is discussion day, Day 2 (Thursday) is surprise quiz day, and Day 3 ( Saturday is discussion or activity day (which can help pull up your grades).

I will always recognize excused absences, but I will not give make-up quizzes.  Only Make-up major exams will be allowed.  The same will apply to any class activity.  Hence avoid being absent, particularly on graded days.  One solution that is open to all of you is to recover that missed graded (quiz or activity) with any accomplishment material that boosts our department.  These include certificates for participating in events (such as seminars, outreach, community development, competitions), recognized researches (through conference presentations or publications), and of course medals and awards.  These should be scanned and submitted to me. Also, following those with perfect attendance but have such credentials can submit to me for credit. Student life is a balance between the inside of the classroom and outside accomplishments.  These accomplishments are recognized in my Rizal class, since as I mentioned today, I want you to be heroes in your own right.  And you do not achieve by just simply being bookish.

For Les Miserables the following lyrics will be your readings:

    1. Prologue
    2. Valjean's Soliloquy
    3. At the End of the Day
    4. I Dreamed a Dream
    5. Lovely Ladies
    6. The Confrontation
    7. Look Down
    8. Stars
    9. ABC Cafe / Red and Black
    10. Do You Hear the People Sing
    11. Dog Eats Dog
    12. Javert's Suicide
    13. The Wedding Chorale
    14. Epilogue

I look forward to a productive 2nd semester with you.

    Completion for IR

For those with INC in IR due to completion (valid excused - absence due to illness), and those who are to be given completion exams and revalida exams.

See me at AB Computer Laboratory at exactly 10:00 a.m. on January 11, 2017.

Completion and revalida exams will be the same coverage.  Coverage are those included in the Final Exam.

For those with failing grades, know that failure in the revalida means a failed final grade.

For those who would be doing completion debate.  There  will be one motion.

Motion (straight up, based on current events) - The Republic of the Philippines rejects Russia's offer of military support.
